The road to entrepreneurial freedom

Sometimes the jolting truths that we learn the hard way can bring us the most comfort at the end of the day. For me, it was this zinger: entrepreneurial freedom is possible, but it’s not inevitable.

The bad news? I realized that I would never just naturally fall into a lifestyle of entrepreneurial freedom. Six figures, seven figures, a new hire, the right marketing engine, or even the best streamlined process weren’t going to magically clear my calendar on their own. They’ve helped, but if I filled my saved time with more clients or projects, I would have ended up working just as much.

The good news? Now I know that I can experience entrepreneurial freedom at any age or revenue level in my business. I’ve had to demand it, design it, and be willing to experiment, but I didn’t have to wait for some magical future time.

The same is true for you! The lifestyle you started your business to experience is possible where you are today.

I’ve discovered that every entrepreneur needs to walk through a few phases to experience things like unplugged vacations, flexible schedules, and calm workdays. I call it The Five Phases of Entrepreneurial Freedom, and those phases look like this:

Phase One: Drowning

  • Marked by constant firefighting, overwhelm, and a sense that you might be missing something important. These feelings often accompany growth, so it’s a good problem to have!

Phase Two: Standing on solid ground

  • Marked by basic boundaries and systems that allow you to feel less overwhelmed most of the time.

Phase Three: Lightening the load

  • Marked by building a support system around you so you’re not carrying your business alone.

Phase Four: Building your house

  • Marked by creating world-class processes and systems in your business so you can experience stability as you grow.

Phase Five: Experiencing a freedom-based business

  • Marked by unplugged vacations, rare emergencies, and the power to design the life you want.

I’m really excited about using this as a tool, and I’d love to hear what resonates with you! What phase do you think you’re in?

For the next few weeks, I’m going to go through each phase one by one…how to know you’re in it, how to thrive in your current phase, and how to move forward to the next phase of your business.

If there’s something specific you’d love me to cover as part of that, please let me know. I’ll be sure to loop it in!

p.s. I tried to work with a graphic artist to visualize these stages. Just for fun, here’s what we ended up with!

p.p.s – Gigi Vancio, the founder of Arte Pad Festival in San Diego, is hosting a virtual interview series all about how creatives can experience consistency, focus, and flow in their work. The project was born out of her own research project to learn what leaders in the field of creativity were doing to get and stay consistent and in the flow of their unique genius. I’m thrilled to say I’m one of the guest speakers!

The event is called: Be An Affluent Creative Genius: Confidently And Consistently Create Your Unique Self-Expression!

I have a free ticket for you to attend. You can watch all the videos – including mine – at your leisure as they go live over the next two weeks (between November 1st and 12th). You can register using this link.
