Reflecting on 2021

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to my work, I have a tendency to jump straight from one project to the next and pay more attention to gaps than successes. It’s easy to think that my natural perspective is the right one, but if this year has taught me anything, it’s that I constantly need to question my own view of things. So I’m glad I decided to sit down and reflect on this year honestly. It’s been an amazing reframe, especially coming after my gratitude exercise over Thanksgiving.

Looking back at A Squared’s fourth year in business, I immediately thought of our gaps…how we didn’t hit our revenue goals and are still iterating on our marketing plan. But then, I thought of the really great high points along the way. I remembered how many people have been generous enough to join this journey with me – to cheer me on, remind me that I’m on the right track, and help me see the good.

These were the biggest things that came up for me:

  • We launched our first-ever group program, Action Amplified, and it’s going really well
  • Thanks to our amazing team, I was able to unplug from the business for two months of maternity leave with confidence that the business would still be going strong when I return
  • We’ve updated our website with our best, clearest messaging so far
  • I got the opportunity to be part of a pro bono project for the first time ever

In light of those things, the gaps don’t seem so significant after all.

I’m excited to keep growing next year…not so much numerically but in ways like this. How can we better serve the people who need what we can do? How can we model entrepreneurial freedom and help others experience it, too?

I’m really excited about that.

If you’re like me and paying close attention to the ways you feel like you fell short last year, I hope you take some time to also see how far you’ve come. Entrepreneurship is hard and messy, and growth is rarely linear. But it’s so fulfilling, isn’t it?

From my spot in the arena to yours, wishing you so much excitement and momentum as we all launch into a new year.
